WHAT SHOULD A STUDENT POSSESS TO WIN A JOB IN IT INDUSTRY?          


1. MARKS IN THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION NEED TO BE HIGH, MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES SEEKS TO RECRUIT CANDIDATES WITH VERY HIGH SCORE. SOME DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS WITH LESS THAN 75% SCORES (STARTING FROM 10 TH STANDARD CONSISTENTLY). THIS REQUIREMENT MAY BE SLIGHTLY RELAXED IN OTHER COMPANIES RECRUITING FRESHERS.


2.     KNOWLEDGE IN THE MAIN SUBJECTS SHOULD BE GOOD. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR CLEARING WRITTEN TESTS AND SUBSEQUENT SELECTION PROCESS - DURING PERSONAL INTERVIEW.

3.    THIRD YEAR AND FINAL YEAR PROJECTS ARE  VERY IMPORTANT, STUDENTS SHOULD INVEST A SUBSTANTIAL TIME IN PROJECT WORK ABD ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO THE PROJECT.

THEORY:  READ AND PREPARE EXTENSIVE  NOTES ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF POWER SUPPLY DESIGN. COMPILE AND LEARN ALL ELECTRONIC  REGULATOR  ICs AND SOLUTIONS. 


(2)   USING DISCRETE COMPONENTS / OPERATIONAL AMPLIER ICs, BUILD OSCILLATORS, AMPLIFIERS,, FILTERS, MODULATOR / DEMODULATORS.


(3)     PRACTICAL:  PLAY AROUND WITH ARM CORE MICRCONTROLLERS,. RABBIT CONTROLLER MODULES,  TRYOUT C CODES,   INTERFACE IT WITH SEVERAL DISPLAY DEVICES, SUCH AS Alpha Numeric LCD, Numeric and LED Displays, various SENSORS, SD/MMC CARD, KEYPAD,

Develop data base applications for one or the other services.


Learn all about linux, 
embedded linux, 
Linux porting to embedded controllers.


How many of the assignment above each student shall have?


When more number of assignments one undertakes, it  increases his chance to  a very good career. Put your best efforts
and devote as much time as it is humanly possible.

Suggestion:
Just walk into a nearby manufacturing Industry / service personnel and findout what devices / solutions could make  their work easy or comfortable. You will hit upon very good ideas.


A recent event:


(1) Two young and dynamic students approached me for suggesting a good project.


I advised them to visit the Food Retail outlets like Nilgiris, Reliance More etc and figureout:

(1) What is taking-stock? Why it is done?how do they do it?.
(2) How frequently it is done?
(3) Finally the method they use, the man power involved and the comfort level of their process. 


The boys were initially unhappy with my suggestion. Soon they got convinced. They were in for surprise when they came back with their results. We sat together to evolve a solution based on
NXP arm controller which can be seen in the photo . 


They boys did developed the board (with very little help from me). 


They developed a hand-held solution that would have no strain on the employees and would take just a couple of hours instead of eight hours. Deploying more units, they can complete it even within an hour or 30 minutes. 


They  demonstrated just one event of collecting the data with a hand held barcode reader attached to the controller board and entering quantities with key pad. True, they could have done much more. The complete product if they could have allocated a month or more.


This was presented this project / product in their College along with other student projects. The principal and a team of evaluators, after hearing how the students arrived at their problem-solution pair, gave away Rs 5000 on the spot to the students as a mark of appreciation.


With such an approach the students would become very good solution providers. There should be creativity, novelty and truly reflect their intellectual abilities reflecting in their project work..


More importantly, the Student;s ability to LEARN should be amply demonstrated.


Unfortunately the students have no practice in learning.
The Education system is meant to enable a person not-only fast but from various sources. 


Unfortunately our Education system has lost its way.


Education is an Institution run by knowledgeable and based on
knowledge. Unfortunately it has become an institution of faith and run exclusively on faith. There is a lot of commonality between Temples which are run on Faith and Education Systems in our country. I wish, it is changed for good sometime soon.

I worked for Indian Space Research Organisation Trivandrum – TERLS – Started as Computer Console Operations, for rocket launch support  – Moved on to Maintenance of Electro-mechanical peripheral devices of the computer system – Subsequently to the Development various of data acquisition sub-systems around MINSK 22 (Russian systems) - all in a period a little over 5 years.  Promoted five positions during this period.

Moved to  SHAR CENTRE,  SRIHARIKOTTA,  of Indian Space Research for 2.5 years in SHAR COMPUTER FACILITY on Data Communication, Computer Maintenance and operations management for Rocket launch support and related Data acquisition.

Joined Ministry of Planning,  Government of India – Computer Center - through Union Public Service commission  - for the Operations &  Maintenance of Computer systems, Installations and Operations responsibility for a period of 4 year Plus. This is a Centralized facility for meeting the computing needs of various government Organisations.

Served Department of Electronics, National Informatics Center, during the IX ASIAD Games at New Delhi for Six months. Was Responsible for installation and maintenance of Information network for the games. Quit the job at the end of an exciting assignment to join CMC Ltd at their Regional wing at Delhi for the maintenance of Varied types Mini-Computers for its client’s, till I am moved over to CMC’s Corporate R&D.

        Development center:

Accepted an assignment as General Manager – in 1997,  to work on Digital connectivity solutions such as IEEE 1394, Networking Solutions – Box products such as routers and
Load balancers . Myself with an ex-colleague created an outfit for our NRI friends in USA, (Rendezvous on Chip, at Secunderabad). I was associated with this organisation for 3.5 years.

Technology Training as a career:

While working in R O C , I created a Technology finishing school which I conceived and personally supervised . This was known as System software school & Technology Development center. Started as a cost center, became a profit center in a short time.

Here candidates were picked based on their ability and willingness to learn.

The school has a paradigms different from formal Engineering schools. Here the trainees are not taught. They  are guided to learn. They work under high pressure and carryout extensive assignments. They are invariably assigned a protect to develop, Sharin g their learnings with fellow trainees is mandatory. (This improves their confidence and ability to communicate).

We staffed significantly, in our own company, with these trainees besides system software developers came to our small facility to pick the trainees for hiring.

The key inputs are: C Programming skills including common data structures, Embedded C Programming, Unix (Internals) Programming, networking and networking applications. (For valid reasons that the  scope for scaling-up the activity was diminishing. I quit the company after 4.5 years to start my own outfit with a dream to establish  a Technology Finishing School with a large infrastructure, equipment and sytems.

That was the reason behind the birth of SOPHISTS that was created at Secunderabad in 2001 with my NRI Kin. Developed quite a few software products like Citrix like solutions on Linux platform for an European client and embedded system solutions such as prototypes for multi-terminal ticketing solutions. We bought a variety of micro controllers for the studets to develop products and solutions Significant products the students developed were:

(a) Distributed ticketing / billing solution - called Suitcase solutions.  A typical, ten nodes of computing devices and a server can comfortably sit in a suitcase.

(b) A network security appliance, The device that encrypt and transmit with its IP address should never hold a file. Anyone succeeds in break firewall should find nothing in it.  Product was successfully demonstrated to a client.

(c) Citrix-like servers /  clients under Linux for a Holland client.

(d) Developed a product under linuu, where one can choose and fire a print job from anywhere  - a printer server and the clients machines need not have the printer-drivers.

9/11 took the toll of this  start-up outfit, besides a few other reasons.

Was a consultant to M/s Robert Bosch India Limited Bangalore for Improving recruitment process to Hire, quality Embedded system professionals, at a fast pace.

This is typically a business process re-engineering task. Achieved the set goal in less than the prescribed time.

A small Service to Engineering graduates with poor economic background:

I came across economically poor and socially backward children who took to Engineering Education to reach the dream affluence. I realized many poor turned poorer as the education could not get them the employment through which they hoped to reach affluence.

Started a small lab at my residence.

Bought quite a few micro-controllers during my last US visit, for the students to experiment with.

Bought Equipments like Oscilloscope, Development kit and development environment.

In the following four years, in the free training facility,  trained some 65 plus fresher Engineers  (who could not find employment even after over three / four years after their Engineeringeducation) in my lab at my apartment, and all for free. By and large, 90% of the trainees  (all who stayed with me for three months and carried out the assigned tasks) were absorbed by different enterprises.

The success could be attributed to my training methodology and past experience – running successfully, perhaps,  India’s first Technology finishing school that I started as a part of Rendezvous on Chip which is merged into Freescale semiconductors of Morotola/!
